| Background: Immersive VR has been a mainstay
product line from VIZCAN for
almost 10 years. In 2003 we built a system, called VIRT,
for physiotherapists that allowed patients to play games while doing
their exercises. The system worked well in its clinical
testing and now is being marketed around the world by a company
no-longer affiliated with VIZCAN
Systems.
We termed the technique - AudioVisual Distraction or AVD.
With the dramatic improvement in technology and corresponding
drops in pricing for components, researchers at
VIZCAN decided to assembly the
technology needed to produce an AudioVisual Distraction
system for patients who remain stationary for period of time from 10
minutes to many hours, while procedures are being carried out on
them. The first two groups that came to mind were dentists and
Rehabilitation Therapists. In the case of Rehabilitation
Therapists, we focused our technology on burn patients who regularly
undergo range-of-motion therapy and wound debridement therapy.
